The Failure of Job Requisitions
We put so much weight on job requisitions. They kick off the process. They drive approvals. They determine pay rates, suppliers, and talent pools.
But the thing I struggle with is that the requisitions don’t always reflect the real work that needs to get done.
It’s often copy-pasted from old roles. Or drafted by a manager who’s too busy to think it through. Or manipulated to fit what the program allows—“Let’s call it admin support so I can get it approved faster.”
The result?
Misaligned expectations
Wrong-fit candidates
Friction with suppliers
Churn before a project ever gets off the ground
Longer time-to-fill
If you’ve ever had to re-interview a contractor for a job they already started, there’s your sign.
So how do we fix it?
Start upstream with intake and triage
Requisitions should come after a quick intake that clarifies the actual business need—not before it. Is this staff augmentation? Project work? Something else?Coach hiring managers
They need to be educated—not just on compliance and job titles, but on how to scope work clearly. Most don’t realize their vague descriptions cause delays and mismatches.Involve partners early
Your MSP or supplier partners can’t work magic with junk inputs. Give them context, let them ask questions, and make them part of the problem-solving process.Use data to drive rework.
Track how often requests are reopened, renegotiated, or backfilled. Those are signals. It’s important to learn from them.
The requisition is the wrapper. But the work is the product. And until we treat it that way, we’ll keep solving the wrong problems with the wrong people.
