What Do AI Agents Think of MSPs?
Let’s say an autonomous AI agent was dropped into a Fortune 500 company with one mission: optimize the total workforce.
It would scan systems, parse historical spend, analyze hiring cycles, and assess productivity by work type.
And eventually, it would find the MSP.
Now imagine the internal monologue:
“There is a separate entity that manages one part of the workforce… but only the non-employees… unless they’re in SOWs… but even then, maybe not… depending on who enters the job request… and whether procurement got involved…?”
“There’s a VMS that tracks all of this—but the data is incomplete, the categorizations are inconsistent, and some workers are labeled as ‘tracking’…?”
“Wait, why is a staffing vendor managing vendor performance? And why is talent being manually added to the program?”
“Also: why is this called a ‘program’? There’s no roadmap, no strategic KPIs, and no clear product owner.”
The AI wouldn’t be mad. At least we hope not, but it might be… confused.
Because when you strip away the legacy, the contracts, and the acronyms, what we’ve built in many CW programs doesn’t make a ton of sense to a system optimizing for efficiency, clarity, or long-term value.
But that’s not a knock on MSPs. In fact some are above this. Some are not. But my point is that it’s a challenge to evolve them. Both as the MSP and as the organization using them.
The AI might say:
“Embed the program into workforce planning.”
“Connect outcomes to business value.”
“Define what’s in-scope and give it real ownership.”
“Use partners for what they do best—not just what they’ve always done.”
Natually it would use many em dashes—but I digress.
But seriously, If an external system can’t make sense of your model, maybe it’s time to ask: Should we? As an industry, we need to evolve and change our ways of thinking. Especially how we use MSPs. If you’re going to use them, use them strategically. Make them a true partner.
